What the brewers say

"Kolsch"

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Nice light ester, perceived malt sweetness, some light floral-hops notes that are like peach blossom.”

Flavor: “Well-balanced with some upfront malt sweetness with a well-placed amount of bitterness to keep things in check. A touch of fruity yeast and hops-flavor complexity adds to some depth. Nice crisp finish with a perfect amount of carbonation. Quite palate cleansing.”

Overall: “A solid Kölsch offering that delivers on what it promises, nothing more and nothing less. Overall good attempt at the style, hits most of the expected notes. Somewhat polarizing—borders on blonde-ale territory, so some may find it less crisp and tight as they might like—but others will really enjoy it.”

Brick West Brewing Company Riverside Kölsch

“Light citrus pith in the aroma and flavor. Balance is toward sweetness, which lingers on the tongue. Cracker-like malt flavor with a hint of rye toward the middle becomes slightly floral as it warms. Mild bitterness. Muted hop flavor. Lingering, light lavender spice in the finish.”

Boulevard Beer American Kolsch

Aroma: “Moderate bready malt with slight banana fruity esters at first followed by light floral and slightly citrus-hops aromas that are joined by watermelon and pear. A very light herbal hops aroma.” Flavor: “Light bready malt and a touch of banana esters continue onto the palate. There’s a moderately low sweetness that transitions into moderately low bitterness. The finish is dry, reminiscent of a fruit cocktail and very clean with a lingering bitterness.” Overall: “Clean and simple. Some unusual flavors that make it intriguing and unique.”

Firestone Walker Brewing Company Easy Jack

**Aroma:** “Citrus and pine is subdued. Candied lemon peel, evergreen, herbal. Very mild nose. Fresh grapefruit yumminess from the hops. Some clean light malt in background.” **Flavor:** “Nice citrus flavor with some pine, mild bitterness, and strong carbonation. Lemongrass, wet earth, pineapple, and honey over a light but silky malt body. Clean and crisp—hops dominate the flavor profile.” **Overall:** “Nicely balanced flavor and aroma. This beer gets much better as it warms. The honey-like malt character supports an interesting array of hops notes that are unique and deliver something apart from your typical session IPA. This is a fairly light, refreshing beer. Some astringency in the aftertaste, but still refreshing and balanced. Where most of the others are trying to emphasize the ‘IPA,’ this one is going for ‘session’ and succeeding.”
