Standard Brewing VooDoo Funk

What the brewers say

"Berliner weisse, style ale, fermented and aged in oak for 3 months, then bottle conditioned."

What our panel thought

"Reminiscent of a young farmhouse or lambic, full of green apple, pear, and hints of oak. Tart, crisp, and slightly salty flavors give the impression of a modern take on a Berliner weisse."

What our editors thought

"An incredibly pale body, but draws you in on the nose with a lemon-curd-on-sourdough-toast tang, and the flavor hits quick with a zap of tart lemon-water acidity that quickly resolves into a fast and gentle finish."

Odd Breed Wild Ales Fresh Off The Farm with Kumquats

“Earthy tropical and lightly cheesy notes coupled with a moderate funk and hints of pepper and coriander. Nectarine-like notes accentuated by a bold acidity and hints of leather, wet hay, and barnyard.”

Jackie O's Berliner Weisse

“Pleasant, inviting, and crisp aromatics with light funk, subtle lemon notes, and a hint of clean earthy and floral hops. The flavor comes across undefined with a thin mouthfeel, a light, soft carbonation profile, and a light acidity and tartness.”

Burial Beer Peel Back the Dead Earth

Aroma: “Moderate peach with hints of black pepper. Light lemon. Creamy aroma with a little burnt rubber coming out. Bright and perfumey.” Flavor: “High Brett funk leads. Sweet, light cream, phenols, fruits. A rustic malt character in the Bière de Garde vein. Adjuncts work in the favor of this beer, but are subtle and don’t immediately stand out as individual ingredients for a pleasant cohesion. Very dry and slightly herbal finish.” Overall: “Dry, light, and well-carbonated. Not as overtly tea-like as the ingredient list might suggest, thankfully. It’s cohesive.”
