Cigar City Brewing Caffè Americano

What the brewers say

Bold, strong, and dark, Caffè Americano is made by adding vanilla and Tampa-roasted espresso beans to a double stout base.

What our panel thought

Coffee and dark chocolate on the nose. Massive dark malt—chewy, rich chocolate and coffee, with an ag-gressively bitter finish to cut the sweetness. The boozy character is a nice punch to remind you to drink this slowly and savor it as it warms. Huge, aggressive, complex, and satisfying.

What our editors thought

A strangely slight nose takes subtlety to the extreme—some coffee is there, but you’ll have to go looking for it. The flavor, however, brings rich and only slightly sweet coffee roast notes to the fore.

Breakside Brewery & Taproom The Trappings and The Suits of Woe

“Rich, deep roast-forward aroma complements assertive oak and whiskey aromas. Deep chocolate, espresso with notes of fig, light raisin. Light espresso. Finish is boozy, but extremely smooth. Very rich, chewy, creamy all at once.”

American Solera Chameleon Bites

“Deep, rich aroma of chocolate, coffee, brown bread, vanilla, marzipan. Rich chocolate cake and brownie edges throughout. Just bitter enough.”

Cerebral Barrel-aged Ancient Ruins

Aroma: “Chocolate and dried cherry with spicy oak, caramel, toffee, and vanilla.” Flavor: “Dark chocolate with an intense boozy barrel character. Warming without being overly aggressive. The finish is a balance of bitter dark malt and sweet chocolate. Nice spicy quality from the barrel. Very sweet, strong, and rich.” Overall: “Rich chewy, boozy. This has all of the complexity you expect from this style: massive dark roast and hints of coffee and dried fruit, all backed by a significant boozy barrel character that adds an underlying heat. Sneaky! It improves as it warms.”
