What the brewers say

“Old Foghorn is highly hopped, fer- mented with a true ale yeast, carbonat- ed by a natural process called ‘bunging’ to produce champagne-like bubbles, and dry-hopped with additional Cascade hops while it ages in our cellars.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Rich malty nose, warm and toasty, with a bit of alcohol backbone and mild hoppiness. Banana fruitiness and a touch of caramel. No hops. Sweet bread with gingersnap cookie highlights. Candied cherry and lots of fruity es- ters—mostly apple, raisin, and pear.”

Flavor: “Toasty and caramel, a little bit oxidized (mostly sherry but some papery notes). Fairly fruity with some stone fruit complexity and nice alcohol warmth in the swallow. Sweet with a balancing bitter foundation. Banana-like esters up front and a long, bitter nish with just enough hops bitterness to avoid being cloying.”

Overall: “A decent English barleywine, but a bit thin-bodied and hoppy for the style. Enjoyed the banana esters, but would like more chewy malt. Could use a bit more caramel malt character and fuller mouthfeel for a more classic English barleywine experience.”

Copper Kettle Brewing Well Bred Barleywine

**Aroma:** “Not as aromatic as most in the style with hints of treacle and brown sugar plus some light oral hops. Medium malt notes amd some dried stone fruit (plums and cherries). Light-to-medium alcohol. Well-blended oak and vanilla. Sweet and malty.” **Flavor:** “Malt sweetness is substantial but hiding behind the hops bitterness. Medium wood expression contributes in a supportive way, but not a lot of whis- key avor from the barrel. Strawberry and vanilla up front along with some light stone fruit, especially apricot and peach. Tannins from the barrel dominate late in the palate. Some woody and boozy notes with a bit of vanillin.” **Overall:** “Well crafted with a good base beer and front of palate. The straw- berry notes are very nice, but the hops bitterness detracts somewhat from the smooth malt.”

Anchor Brewing Company Anchor Saison

**Aroma:** “Fruity sweetness dominates. Slightly earthy, spicy, funky character. Light lemon soap aroma with ginger. An oddly earthy, almost cheese-like or mushroom-like character.” **Flavor:** “Sweetness is profiled and carries notes of moderate malt and lemon citrus. Lemon and ginger. Fruit character balanced by medium bitterness. Earthy, spicy notes help balance and supply a dry, graham cracker finish.” **Overall:** “Very enjoyable and refreshing. Interesting choices of ingredients. Good balance of sweet citrus and earthy hops. If you like beets, you’ll like this beer. Spices could be crisper.”

Epic Brewing Barleywine

“Muted aroma with low hops and hints of caramel and toast. Murky. Moderate, but simple, caramel and toast flavor. After an initial hit of sweetness, black pepper, anise, pine, and light grassy notes emerge. Balance is even between malt and hops, but flavors meld well.”
