River North Brewery Father Time

What the brewers say

"An English barleywine intended to exceed the upper limits of the style guidelines, yielding a beer that is much more intense than a more traditional barleywine, while also enhancing long-term cellarability."

What our panel thought

"Raisiny, dried apple and other dried fruit, toasted wood. Deep aromas of dark fruits like plum and raisins. Beautiful ruby highlights in the color. Fabulous deep caramel complexity accompanied by a boozy sidekick. Sweet dark bread malt plays nicely with the dark fruits and tends toward a decedent dessert flavor. Real coziness of flavor here. Soft, caramellized gooiness to sink into. Sticky richness, Maillard heaven, deep winter pleasantries. Baking spices come through the finish with a touch of alcohol warmth that helps balance the sweetness."

What our editors thought

"Dark berry and tasted breadcrust with a vinous, woody note in the aroma. Layered in the sip with deep vinous and fortified wine notes, a bit of ethanol bite, berry top notes, and a warming alcohol that lingers deep into the finish."

River North Brewery Anniversary 11 Stout

Rich, melting, fondue dark chocolate. Smells of deep oak, vanilla, and chocolate covered dark fruits with hints of tobacco.A slight booziness in the aroma that comes in much stronger in the flavor. Rich, oaky and resplendent. Oak and alcohol flavors are predominant, but allow for chocolate covered raisins to follow through and a slight cherry impression adds depth. Lots of vanilla oozing from the thick, dark mysteries. A spicy mouthfeel appears midway through the finish. Definitely strong, but its surprising momentum eases away after a few sips, and then you're fully in its grasp.

River North Brewery Double Barrel Aged Father Time

Some dried fruit thickness here–plum, raisin, fig. Bourbon barrel character upfront in the aroma with hints of alcohol and some dark fruits like raisins. Spike of sweet jammy goodness right off the bat followed by a smooth mellowed woodiness, but in the sweetest sense. Milk chocolate and alcohol dominate the flavor and the presence of alcohol lasts through the flavor, but does not burn. Nutella-y in its smoothness. Decadent. Sweet, rich body followed by a beautiful tannic cut. Deep chocolate covered raisin flavor lasts through the aftertaste.

Component Brewing Co Pierogi Pils

Malt forward nose, like freshly-milled Vienna malt, carries on through to the flavor with honey, cereal, and bread crust. Moderately high earthy hop notes define the aroma. Hop bitterness leans toward the low end, but not in a bad way. The flavor has a slightly biscuity malt backbone supporting an interesting herbal and earthy hop character with some spicy white pepper notes. Hints of peppery, floral hops. Excellent clarity and a big fluffy bright white head. Enjoyable.
